The name Gentiana derives from Gentius, king of Illyria, who is said to have been the first to make known the medicinal properties of the plant, 160 years before Christ. Lutea means yellow, referring to the color of its flowers, unlike other gentian species which have blue-violet colored flowers.
The components of its root are believed to have a tonic-digestive/eupeptic action, anti-fermentative, stimulating appetite and the liver.
