Salsapariglia, Smilax aspera, belonging to the Liliaceae family, is a climbing shrub with heart-shaped leaves. Its Latin name means “prickly scraper”. The term Salsapariglia derives from Spanish and means small vine. Known in tradition because it was mistakenly considered effective against syphilis.
