Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) is a tree native to tropical Southeast Asia, widely found in India, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The leaves of this plant have traditionally been used in folk medicine to fight diabetes. In fact, modern scientific research has identified a variety of molecules in Banaba leaves – such as corosolic acid – that can improve blood sugar control. These active components help reduce glucose absorption in the intestine and promote its transfer from the blood to the cells.
The presence of corosolic acid, according to studies, reveals an insulin-like mechanism of action, also active when administered orally, promoting glucose utilization by cells, so much so that it has been called phyto-insulin.
