According to studies, the functioning of Valeriana depends on the presence, inside it, of particular acids, which are able to inhibit the activity of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a chemical mediator responsible for neuronal excitability.
The carminative activity (preventing the formation of intestinal gas and promoting their emission) of Valeriana depends instead on the presence inside it of terpenes and flavonoids, which determine a calming action on cramps and abdominal pain.
