Filipendula ulmaria Max, or Olmaria or Spirea ulmaria or Regina dei Prati, is a plant characterized by beautiful white flowers with a pleasant and delicate fragrance. The presence of salicylic acid and salicylates, compounds from which acetylsalicylic acid is derived, the active ingredient of the famous aspirin, justifies the traditional use of Filipendula ulmaria as an anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic, indicated to support normal joint function.
The name derives from the Greek "speira" referring to the shape of the fruits "in spiral" combined with Ulmus due to the similarity of its leaf to that of the elm. Known during the Middle Ages for the fragrance emitted by the leaves, which is why they were kept in domestic environments
The plant is rich in tannins, molecules attributed with the ability to reduce inflammation and mucus. It also contains good amounts of salicylates, compounds similar to acetylsalicylic acid found in aspirin. For this reason, products based on Filipendula are proposed in cases of cold, bronchitis, and joint problems such as gout. They are also recommended to increase urine production and as germicides in case of bladder infections.
