A perennial hairy herbaceous plant with leaves similar to nettle. Also called "black horehound" or "stinking herb" due to the unpleasant odor it emits. The flowers are violet-purple with a bilabiate corolla. The genus name is of Greek origin but its meaning is uncertain. The species name "foetida" clearly refers to the bad smell of a stink bug (one of the common names is "cimiciotta") while the synonym "nigra" probably refers to the color of the leaves which blacken as the plant dries.
